Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - Coming off an emotional overtime victory the previous night, the Checkers wanted to keep the momentum going against the Augusta Lynx and they did just that as they edged the visiting team in a 3-2 victory.
The Checkers found themselves with the man advantage in the early stages of the first period and would make it count. Checkers forward, Mike Bayrack would send a pass to defenseman, Michael Busto who would score his first professional goal at 2:22 giving Charlotte a 1-0 advantage. Charlotte would increase their lead by a goal after a two-on-one break resulted in a shot by Jeff Kryzakos that was stopped by Lynx netminder, Bobby Goepfert but, the rebound went right to the stick of Kenton Smith and he would bury his chance at 16:01 putting the Checkers up, 2-0. With 18 seconds remaining in the stanza, Augusta would slash the Checkers lead in half as forward Jeremy Schenderling put in his own rebound as he was stationed in front of Charlotte goalie, Mike Ayers. The period would end with Charlotte up, 2-1.
In the middle stanza, Charlotte would retrieve their two goal lead during a power play. Ryan Murphy stood behind the net and fed Kryzakos who blasted a shot over the glove of Goepfert at 2:54 putting the Checkers up, 3-1.
During the final period, Augusta would cut Charlotte's lead again after Will Bodine shot the puck along the ice between the legs of Ayers as he was positioned just outside the crease. This would bring the game to a 3-2 Checkers lead at 13:42. It wouldn't be enough to close the gap and the Checkers would skate away with a 3-2 victory.
Notes: The Checkers scored two power play goals on seven attempts and the Lynx were unsuccessful in their seven tries...Ayers turned aside 33 of 35 shots while Goepfert stopped 42 of 45.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Jan. 20 against the Texas Wildcatters. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
