South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays struck first with a Chris Chaput goal in the first period, but it was not enough, as the Augusta Lynx scored three unanswered goals to win 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"I was very disappointed with our effort tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "This is the first time this season where we didn't show up for the entire 60 minutes."
In the first period Chaput got a power play goal, his 13th of the season, from Sean Collins and Pat McNeill at 6:55. Though the Rays had a number of other opportunities, with three power plays in the period, they were unable to get it through Bobby Goepfert, who was on top of his game.
In the second period, it was a short handed goal by Bobby Bolt, as the Lynx had a three on one that tied the game up at one. This was the sixth short handed goal the Rays have given up this season, and the ninth that Augusta has scored. With less than a minute to go in the period Louis Goulet got the eventual game winning goal and a back-hand deflection to make the score 2-1 after two periods.
The Stingrays played much better in the third period, and had a number of great opportunities to tie up the game, but were unable to capitalize. With the game winding down they pulled Josh Johnson for the extra attacker. Even with the sixth man, and Augusta only having four, since they received a minor penalty, South Carolina couldn't find the back of the net, and off a face off Goulet would get an empty net short handed goal to seal the victory 3-1.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Johnson who stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced. The Rays went one for nine on the power play while killing off seven of the eight short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action tomorrow night at the North Charleston Coliseum when they take on the Gwinnett Gladiators for the first game of a home and home. Game time will be at 7:05.
