Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Elmira, NY - The Johnstown Chiefs closed out January with a 6-4-1 record as a result of a 3-1 loss to the Elmira Jackals on Wednesday night.
The Chiefs found themselves in a hole after 20 minutes of play. Frank Littlejohn took a home run pass from Benoit Doucet, and beat Chiefs' netminder Ryan Nie with only 42 seconds remaining in the first. The Jackals out-shot the Chiefs 14-5 in the first period thanks, in part, to holding a 2-to-1 advantage in power plays.
The Jackals stretched their lead in the second period when Bobby Robins banked a wrist shot from the right wing off of Nie's mask and into the net. The Chiefs held a 12-to-10 advantage in shots in the second, but Dan LaCosta was up to each challenge.
Rob Drummond got the Chiefs on the board with a shorthanded goal at the 9:25 mark of the third. Drummond and Codey Burki worked a 2-on-2 rush and Drummond fired a laser of a wrister by LaCosta on the blocker side.
Littlejohn answered Drummond's goal, though, just 28 seconds later to provide insurance for LaCosta. The Chiefs had a bounty of quality chances with Bobby Robins in the box for hooking at the 11:33 mark of the third, as well as with Nie pulled for the last 1:24, but LaCosta, the second star of the game, stood his ground.
Nie lost for the first time at First Arena, but played well making 31 saves, but the Chiefs' power play had a tough night again going 0-for-5.
The Chiefs' next home game is on Saturday, February 2 against the Dayton Bombers. That night all AAA members who show their membership card at the box office will get a discount on their ticket! If you miss that one, you can catch the Chiefs on February 3 against the Elmira Jackals for Steelers Pride Day. All fans who show up in the Steelers gear will get $1 off their ticket at the box office, and a prize will go to the biggest Steelers fan in attendance! Great seats are still available at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial, call 536-5156 or go to www.johnstownchiefs.com to get yours today!!
