Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have acquired third-year pro Mike Brown, who has been re-assigned to the club by the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. In a separate transaction, fellow goaltender Kris Tebbs has been placed on waivers.
Brown, under contract with Providence's NHL affiliate in Boston, who drafted the six-foot, 190-pounder in the fifth round in 2003, has six AHL wins against just two losses this year with Providence, the last of which came on November 30. He had gotten only 62 minutes with the Bruins over his first two pro seasons prior to this one, giving up just two goals on just 26 shots in three no-decisions, but in regular work early this season, posted a solid 2.87 GAA at the AHL level, including a five-game winning streak, and helped Providence rack up 15 wins in its first 20 games.
The 22-year-old Brown (he'll turn 23 March 4) endured two and a half years with struggling Saginaw in the Ontario Hockey League, going 29-70-9 between 2002-04. Four of Mike's 14 wins during a 32-loss campaign in 2003-04 came by way of shutout. After being traded to Owen Sound in December 2004, his junior career took on new life, as he went 17-9-6 with three shutouts, a 2.49 GAA, and a .913 save percentage, and twice earned OHL Goalie of the Month honors. As a pro, Brown has played for three losing teams in the ECHL and gone 19-40-6. His only professional shutout came last November 17 when he stopped all 25 shots he faced against Utah.
Tebbs, meanwhile, departs Alaska after having been pulled in three of his last four starts, including Sunday's eventual 7-5 loss to Victoria. He finished 2-2-1 with a 3.98 GAA and a .873 save percentage in eight appearances for the Aces.
With just two wins in its last nine games (2-5-2) but an overall record of 20-15-5, Alaska practiced yesterday in Utah in preparation for a three-game series that gets underway this evening at 4:45 p.m. AT. The Grizzlies (20-19-4) are just one point behind the third-place Aces in the West Division standings, but have played three more games. All regular season games are broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
