North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (32-18-1-6) earned a team-record 14th consecutive victory behind a 5-1 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators (17-34-2-4) at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. The streak breaks the previous team record of 13 set back in the 2009-10 season and is tied for the third longest winning streak in ECHL history.
The Gladiators opened the scoring early in the first period as forward Mike Merrifield connected with forward Brenden Walker to slip a shot under the glove of Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 29 saves on 30 shots) at 3:01. The Stingrays responded at 7:49 when forward Rob Ricci forced a turnover inside the right-wing circle to rifle a shot over the glove of Gladiators goaltender Mike Lee (L, 22 saves on 26 shots). Forward Wayne Simpson earned the lone assist.
Defenseman Garrett Haar put the Stingrays in front 4:54 into the second period completing a 2-on-1 rush with forward Patrick Gaul. Defenseman Frankie Simonelli added the second assist. Stingrays forward Andrew Ammon made it 3-1 at 9:35 beating Lee under the blocker from the top of the crease. Forward Tim Spencer registered the lone assist.
The Stingrays piled on two more goals in the third period to seal the victory. Forward Joe Devin snapped a shot past the stick of Lee at 1:23 with help from forwards Rob Bellamy and Brandon Wong and defenseman Lee Moffie completed the scoring with an unassisted empty-net shorthanded goal at 16:40. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-4.
The Stingrays visit the Gladiators tomorrow, Saturday, March 7 at 7:05 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia and close the weekend with the final regular-season meeting against the Greenville Road Warriors on Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Stingrays honor the men and women of the Armed Forces on Military Appreciation Night presented by APECS Aerospace Corporation, Precision Airparts Support Services, United Aeronautical Corporation, U.S. Technical and Heritage Pools on Saturday, March 14 at 7:05 p.m. at the Coliseum. WCW and WWE Champion Ric Flair will fire up the crowd as the Stingrays skate in special "Stars and Stripes" jerseys and auction them off after the contest.
