Allen Americans News Release
Moline, Illinois -The Allen Americans blew a 2-1 third period lead on Friday night, falling to the Quad City Mallards by a 3-2 score at i-Wireless Center.
The Mallards scored the only goal of the opening frame, when Logan Nelson fired home his 14th of the season from Jeff Lee and Kevin Baker at the 16:01 mark of the opening period. Both teams each had two power plays attempts in the first, with both penalty kill units standing strong. Quad City outshot Allen 11-7.
The Americans bounced back in the second period scoring two times, first Patrik Valcak found Gary Steffes in front of the Mallards net for Steffes' 38th of the season on the power play. Then Chad Costello followed up an Aaron Gens shot from the point, back-handing it home for his 30th of the season (Gens, Hanson) to make it 2-1. The Americans were awarded a penalty shot in that second frame, after Gary Steffes was interfered with on a breakaway. Mallards' goalie Parker Milner denied Steffes and the Americans headed to the locker room on top 2-1. Quad City held a slight advantage in shots 23-19 after two periods.
The Mallards would tie the game halfway through the final period when Kevin Baker tipped one home on cross-ice feed to make it 2-2. The game would remain that way until the final minute when Kevin Baker struck for the second time on the night. Matt Duffy fired one from the outside that hit the post, however the goal light came on and Americans players on the ice reacted to what they thought was a goal. Referee Kenny Anderson immediately waived it off and Kevin Baker pounded home the rebound to give the Mallards the lead for the final time on the evening, 3-2. Allen pulled the goaltender for the final 13 seconds, but was unable to score as the Mallards won the first game of the two-game set.
"Need our experienced players to be better with the lead," said Allen Americans Head Coach and GM Steve Martinson. "We were defensively weak on both third period goals and not good in front of our own net on all three goals."
The same two clubs will meet tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Allen returns home on March 17th against the Wichita Thunder. www.allenamericans.com
