Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, TX- Despite a busy travel schedule of late, Allen Americans players and coaches spent time giving back to the community. Americans Assistant coach Erik Adams, along with team mascot Biscuit, Kyle Follmer and Justin Baker visited elementary schools in the area.
The Americans first stop was to Crutchfield Elementary in Sherman, on February 17th. Follmer and Baker took part in gym assembly for the third and fourth grade classes. The players also discussed the number of hours and preparation a team goes through during the season and how everything must come together at the right time for a team to win a championship. The team brought last season's Presidents' Cup trophy for display.
The players took different hockey skills and applied them to everyday classroom activities such as teamwork, responsibility, hard work, and learning from your mistakes. Then they covered basic personal health education like fitness, proper nutrition and life as a professional athlete in hopes of promoting a new, healthier, generation. Adams ended the assembly by letting the children try on hockey gear and creating a race for them.
On February 26th, the Americans visited sixth graders at Marion Elementary in Allen. The group visited with a school leadership group that meets monthly. Players spoke about skills learned from being professional athletes and what it takes to be a leader. The focus for the kids was on self-confidence and teamwork in all aspects of life.
Also, in preparation for the annual Police vs. Fire Charity Game, Americans representatives helped with practices prior to the game last weekend. Americans players and coaches worked with both teams to help sharpen their skills before the sixth annual event.
Starting off the month of March, ECHL leading goal scorer, Gary Steffes, attended Creek Wood Church on Tuesday night. He addressed young Christian athletes about life as an athlete from his own experiences, as well as obstacles and lessons learned over the years that have helped him in maintaining his faith.
