Reign Earn Point in Tight 1-0 OT Loss to Grizzlies

March 6, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - The Ontario Reign (30-16-4-5), four-time ECHL Pacific Division Champions and proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell in overtime by a 1-0 score to the Utah Grizzlies (28-21-5-3) in front of a crowd of 3,861 on Friday night at Maverik Center.

Both teams played to a scoreless first period, with each club trading nine shots on goal.

The Reign remained relentless in the middle frame, outshooting the Grizzlies by a 20-6 margin, but both neither Ontario's Jussi Olkinuora nor Utah's Igor Bobkov surrendered a goal.

Olkinuora and the Reign were placed in a precarious situation early in the third when Alex Roach was whistled for cross-checking at 3:23 and Maxim Kitsyn was called for slashing at 4:15, but Ontario's special teams succesfully kept the Grizzlies at bay during the 5-on-3 penalty kill, and then Olkinuora continued to deny Utah's offense, making 14 stops in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The Reign and Grizzlies each earned a point following a scoreless 60 minutes of play, but the Grizzlies earned the extra point when Ryan Hayes took a pass from Barry Almeida off of the end boards and fired the puck past Olkinuora 1:30 into overtime.

Olkinuora took the overtime loss with 31 saves; Bobkov made 36 stops in the win.
