The Series:
This is the first ever post season meeting between these two teams. The Rays have struggled this season against the Inferno with a record of 1-3-2. The Inferno beat the Stingrays three times in the last two weeks of the season with two wins coming in shoot outs. The Rays only win of the season against the Inferno came at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia on November 3 (3-2). The Inferno finished with the eighth best record in the ECHL with a mark of 44-20-8. Last season Columbia advanced as far as the Kelly Cup Finals before being topped by the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. Columbia is 13-9 in two seasons of Kelly Cup playoff action. The Stingrays are the only team in ECHL history to win two Kelly Cups. The Rays won the cup in 1997 and 2001. Last season South Carolina fell to the Pee Dee Pride in the first round in four games. Tim Smith led the ECHL in scoring this season with 95 points on 33 goals and 62 assists. He had nine points against the Stingrays on two goals and seven assists. Curtis Huppe led the Stingrays offensively over the Inferno this season with three goals and two assists. Columbia had a 25% power play against the Stingrays this season and had three short handed goals against South Carolina. Goaltender Doug Teskey was 3-0 against the Rays with a GAA of 2.21. Kirk Daubenspeck had a GAA of 2.71 against the Inferno but managed one win against two losses. The Stingrays are 7-12-3 all time against the Columbia Inferno.

Kirk Daubenspeck earned his third shut out of the season making 30 saves over the Lynx, who had blanked the Stingrays their last time in to the Coliseum. Ed Courtenay scored a pair of goals in the win and Boris Protsenko added another.
Thursday, April 1 2004 Stingrays 4 @ Greenville 3
The Stingrays trailed three times in the game, but scored two goals in the third period to top the Grrrowl. Curtis Huppe scored a goal and had 11 shots on net in the win and Kevin Spiewak netted the game winner.
Friday, April 2, 2004 Stingrays 3 Vs Columbia 4 shoot out
South Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but allowed the Inferno to storm back to force overtime. Mike Barrie, Curtis Huppe and Marty Clapton all scored for the Stingrays as the Inferno beat the Rays in a shoot out for the second straight week.
Saturday, April 3, 2004 Stingrays 2 Vs Greensboro 4
The Generals used a short handed goal in the third period to put away the Rays and drop South Carolina in to fourth place in the Southern Division. Rookie Dustin Johner scored both goals for the Stingrays, his first goals as a professional.
The Team:
The Stingrays finish the regular season in fourth place in the Southern Division with a record of 39-28-5. The team went 2-1-1 this week with one home win and one road win, one home loss and a home shoot out loss. South Carolina finished the season with a mark of 19-14-3 at home and 20-14-2 on the road. The Stingrays boast the best road power play in the ECHL at 23.3%. The Stingrays are 21-16-4 against teams in the Southern Division and 18-12-1 against the other divisions. The Rays are 4-2 in overtime games, 6-3 in shootout games and 16-3-5 in one goal games overall. When they score first, the Stingrays are 24-9-3. South Carolina has allowed just 2.81 goals against per game this season which ranks 13th in the league. Offensively the team is ranked 22nd averaging 2.85 goals per game. The Rays power play finished 12th in the league at 18.6% and the team is ranked 17th on the penalty kill at 82.4% The team allowed 19 short handed goals against, which was 31st in the league.
The Players:
Dustin Johner was signed by the Stingrays on Monday after finishing the season with Seattle of the Western Hockey League. Johner had two goals and four assists for the Stingrays in four games played. Ed Courtenay finished the season with 29 goals and 37 assists to lead the Stingrays with 66 points. Curtis Huppe had a strong finish to his season and had a career high of 27 goals. Marty Clapton also hit a Stingrays career high with 17 goals on the season. Kirk Daubenspeck and David Brumby combined for a 2.76 goals against average this season with five shut outs. The Rays goaltending tandem also had a save percentage of .919%.
