Reading Royals News Release
The Reading Royals held on to beat the Johnstown Chiefs 2-1 in regulation in their first-ever Kelly Cup playoff game in Johnstown Monday night. David Masse led the way with both Reading tallies, while Lars Pettersen chipped in two helpers for the Royals. Reading finished the regular season 0-4-0 in Johnstown, winning Monday for the first time this season.
Reading got off to a great start posting the first two goals of the game in their first round Kelly Cup wild card with the Johnstown Chiefs. David Masse scored at 6:47 in the first period receiving a pass from Lars Pettersen in the slot to put Reading on top 1-0. Masse would score his second goal on the power play, again from Pettersen, blasting in a shot from the right point. Johnstown would cut the Royal lead in half less than a minute and a half later as Steve Hildenbrand fired in a power play tally from the middle of the right circle at the 16:11 mark. Jeff Zehr and PL Courschene recorded assists.
The Royals took a 2-1 lead to the lockerroom after the first stanza. Reading and Johnstown would battle over the next 43 minutes with neither team scoring. The Royals win their first-ever playoff game and will move on to battle the Wheeling Nailers on Thursday and Friday in Wheeling, West Virginia. Face off time will begin at 7:00 p.m. from Wes Banco Arena in Wheeling.
