Stingrays Close Weekend with 5-2 Win over Gladiators

Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays (33-15-1-3) wrapped up a three-game in three-day weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (18-30-2-2) at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Sunday afternoon. Forward Peter Boyd led the Stingrays with a goal and two assists.

After a scoreless opening period, three goals found the back of the net within 50 seconds with the Stingrays taking a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. Stingrays forward Wayne Simpson kicked off the scoring at 12:44 lifting a shot over the glove of Gladiators goaltender Andrew Loewen (L, 20 saves on 25 shots) from forward Luke Greiner. Gladiators team captain Joey Haddad tied the game deflecting a shot past netminder Max Strang (W, 29 saves on 31 shots) off the right post. Forward Peter Boyd put the Stingrays back up with his team-leading 19 goal of the season at 13:33 with help for forward Patrick Gaul. At 18:15 forward Jack Downing gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead capitalizing on the power play from Boyd and defenseman Drew Baker. Seconds later, Gladiators forward Dirk Southern pulled the game back within one goal at 18:29.

In the third period, forward Dale Mitchell made it 4-2 off a 5-on-3 power play ripping a shot past the blocker of Loewen at 3:05 from Boyd and defenseman Luka Vidmar. Simpson completed the scoring with his second goal of game at 9:51. Mitchell received the lone assist. The Stingrays wrapped up the afternoon 2-for-4 on the power play while the Gladiators 0-for4.
