February 23, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
ELMIRA, NY- On Sunday afternoon, the Wheeling Nailers played their eighth game in 12 games, and they finished it with an explosion. Wheeling lit the lamp four times in the first period, en route to a 7-0 blasting of the Elmira Jackals at First Arena. Kieran Millan picked up the shutout with 24 saves.
The Nailers launched themselves out of the gates to start the contest, matching a season-high, thanks to a four-goal first period. The first goal came just 1:18 in, when Zack Torquato faked a slap shot from the high slot, before dragging the puck to his right, and connecting with a wrist shot. Midway through the frame, Wheeling added to its lead, starting with a power play goal 10:55. Sahir Gill dropped the puck back to Barry Goers, who teed up a one-timer from the blueline, blasting his shot through a screened Neil Conway. 46 seconds later, Colin Mulvey made the score 3-0, when he finished a 3-on-2 rush with Tyler Fernandez and Shane Bakker, wristing a shot in from the right circle. Cody Sylvester completed the first period scoring with 5:10 to go, when he powered in a slap shot from the left circle.
Midway through the second period, the Nailers tallied once more. Shane Bakker picked up a loose puck in the left corner of his own zone, before launching a pass ahead to Denver Manderson in neutral ice. Manderson caught the puck in stride, breaking away, before roofing a shot over Conway's glove.
In the third period, Wheeling completed its thumping, with two more goals. Cody Sylvester's second of the day deflected off of a defender at the 12:02 mark, and with 1:23 remaining, Denver Manderson centered the puck for Carter Rowney, who buried a one-timer over Conway's glove for the 7-0 final score.
Kieran Millan earned his first ECHL shutout for the Nailers, thwarting all 24 attempts sent his way. Neil Conway took the loss for the Jackals, allowing seven goals on 38 shots.
The Nailers and Jackals will do battle again in Elmira on Friday at 7:05. Wheeling's next home game takes place on Saturday at 7:00 against the Reading Royals.
