Rubber Match of the Weekend

The Wheeling Nailers and Elmira Jackals have split the first two clashes in their three-game weekend series, as the Jackals picked up a 5-2 win on Friday, before the Nailers responded with a 3-1 triumph on Saturday. Cody Sylvester opened the scoring in Saturday's game for Wheeling, as he netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Elmira tied the score early in the third on a power play goal by Danny Hobbs, but Wheeling had an answer, as Chaz Johnson tallied a power play goal to put the visitors back on top. Denver Manderson finished off the win with an empty net goal, while Mike Condon stopped 23 shots between the pipes.

Chaz Saves His Best for Elmira

During his first season as a member of the Nailers, Chaz Johnson has accumulated nine goals, 13 assists, and 22 points in 45 games. Five of those contests have been played at First Arena in Elmira - a building that Johnson used to call "home." Chaz has found the back of the net five times on the road against his former club, recording a hat trick on November 15th, before scoring once each on February 21st and 22nd. His tally on the 22nd broke a 1-1 deadlock with 10:58 remaining in regulation, as he snagged his second game winning goal of the campaign. Eight of Johnson's nine goals have been scored on the road.

Three Games, Three Different Goalies

Wheeling Head Coach Clark Donatelli has three goaltenders on his roster, and on Sunday afternoon, he will turn to his third different backstop in as many days, as Kieran Millan will make his second start with the Nailers. Millan's lone prior start came on February 12th, when he made 21 saves in a 4-1 win over the Toledo Walleye. Kieran will become the fifth different netminder to appear in a game for Wheeling against Elmira this season, as Mike Condon has gone 4-1-0, Eric Hartzell went 2-0-0, Peter Mannino is currently 1-1-0, and Mathieu Corbeil turned in a 1-0-1 record. The Jackals have utilized three different goalies against Wheeling, with Neil Conway going 1-1-1, Scott Greenham having gone 1-3-1, and Maxime Clermont sitting at 1-2-0.

Rough Sledding in the Atlantic

Divisional games have had a large impact on the 2013-14 standings, and for the Jackals, that hasn't been the best of news. While Elmira has posted a stellar 12-4-3 mark against the North Division, the Nailers and Royals haven't been nearly as kind. The Jackals are currently in the midst of a stretch where they play seven of eight games against those two clubs. Thus far, they have gone 1-2-1, running their season record within the Atlantic Division to 5-14-3. Wheeling is 12-8-2 against the division, with eight games remaining.

Season Series Has Been Decided

Sunday afternoon's game marks the 12th of 15 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the sixth of eight tilts at First Arena. Thanks to its win on Saturday night, Wheeling clinched the season series against Elmira for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign, as the Nailers are 8-2-1, with four contests remaining. The win was also Wheeling's third of the year in Elmira, marking the first time it has accomplished that feat, since the Jackals joined the ECHL at the start of the 2007-08 season. The Nailers' record for wins against an opponent in a single season is 12 (2005-06 vs. Dayton), and they have also defeated an opponent nine times on three occasions (2005-06 vs. Johnstown, 2010-11 & 2011-12 vs. Trenton).
