Sounds Blare with 12-Run Inning

Nashville, Tenn. - A 12-run second inning by the Nashville Sounds put the Oklahoma City Dodgers in a deep deficit early Wednesday, but the Dodgers were able to battle back with eight unanswered runs in an eventual 14-11 loss to the Sounds Wednesday night at First Tennessee Park.

The Sounds led, 14-3, after three innings before the Dodgers bullpen held the Sounds without another run over the final five innings while the Dodgers' offense chipped away at the deficit to cut the Sounds' lead to three runs in the seventh inning of the series finale.

The Sounds held on to send the Dodgers to a third straight loss as Nashville took the five-game series between the teams, 3-2.

The 12 runs scored by the Sounds in the bottom of the second inning were the most allowed by the Dodgers in an inning this season and most since at least 2005. The Dodgers last allowed a double-digit run total in an inning Aug. 22, 2013 at Round Rock when the Express scored 10 runs in the sixth inning of a 12-3 win against OKC.

The 12-run inning for the Sounds included nine hits and one error as 16 Nashville batters came to the plate in the frame. Infielder Andy Ibáñez racked up four RBI in the inning.

The Dodgers (34-50) had the lead entering the bottom of the second inning.

Nashville had scored first Wednesday, getting the early advantage on a sacrifice fly by Eli White in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Jon Kemmer led off the second inning for the Dodgers with a home run - his third since joining the team last week. His solo shot out to right field tied the game, 1-1. Later in the inning, Shane Peterson hit a solo homer of his own out to center field to put the Dodgers in front, 2-1. The homer was Peterson's eighth of the season.

Nashville (38-47) took its commanding lead in the bottom of the inning.

Ibáñez led off with a homer and Zack Granite, who finished with a game-high four hits, added a RBI single to put the Sounds ahead, 3-2. Eli White hit a bloop RBI single to right field to give Nashville a 4-2 lead as the first seven batters reached base for the Sounds. Matt Davidson's sacrifice fly then put the Sounds ahead by three runs with the first out of the inning.

Patrick Wisdom added a RBI single and loaded the bases before Ibáñez connected on a bases-clearing double for a 9-2 advantage. Christian Lopes later added a three-run homer for a 12-2 lead as he finished the game with four RBI. White brought home the 12th run of the inning for the Sounds when he grounded into a fielder's choice for a 13-2 lead.

The teams exchanged runs in the third inning. Cameron Perkins' RBI double brought the Dodgers a run closer before Nashville quickly took the run back with a RBI single by Lopes for a 14-3 advantage.

The Dodgers offense started chipping away at the Sounds' lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. With the bases loaded, Kemmer grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home a run. With the bases loaded again, Peterson lined a two-run single into left field to make the score, 14-6.

The Dodgers' offense made some more noise in the seventh inning, scoring five runs. DJ Peters hit a RBI single, then with the bases loaded, Drew Jackson connected on a RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Josh Thole cut the deficit to 14-9. With the bases loaded again, and after a Nashville pitching change, Connor Joe lined a two-run single into left field to cut Nashville's lead to three runs.

Joe, Perkins and Peterson all finished with multi-hit and multi-RBI nights, led by Peterson's three hits and three RBI.

While Oklahoma City crept closer on the scoreboard, the Dodgers' bullpen held the Sounds scoreless and to three hits and three walks over the final 5.1 innings with 12 strikeouts.

Dodgers starting pitcher Brock Stewart (2-7) was charged with the loss, allowing a career-high 12 runs and tying his career-high with 10 hits allowed. He issued two walks and did not record a strikeout over 1.1 innings.

Nashville starting pitcher Wes Benjamin (4-5) got the win, allowing six runs and seven hits over 5.0 innings. Kyle Bird pitched the final 2.1 innings for his second save of the season with Nashville.

Wednesday marked the third time this season the Dodgers allowed 14 or more runs by an opponent. It was also the first time Oklahoma City scored double-digit runs in a loss since June 15, 2017 when the Dodgers lost, 15-11, to Omaha at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Dodgers return home tomorrow for an Independence Day celebration when they play the Round Rock Express at 7:05 p.m. July Fourth at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark to kick off a five-game series between the teams.

The game falls on a $2 Thursday featuring $2 select draft beer, Pepsi products and bottled water. A special fireworks show, presented by LifeShare of Oklahoma, is scheduled to follow the game and Dodgers players and coaches will take the field wearing special Stars and Stripes hats.
