Bees Sweep Tacoma Twinbill
July 3, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
The Salt Lake Bees swept the Tacoma Rainiers in a doubleheader on Tuesday night.
In game one, the Bees rolled to a 9-1 win over Tacoma behind a great outing by starting pitcher Nick Tropeano. Tropeano (2-2) retired the first twelve batters he faced until Kristopher Negron led off the fifth with a bunt single. That was the only hit he would allow in six scoreless innings with just one walk and seven strikeouts. Salt Lake would break the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, as Michael Hermosillo walked to lead off the inning. Two outs later, he scored on a double into the right field corner by Kaleb Cowart, who came home on a single by Roberto Pena. They would break the game open with five runs in the sixth on a two run homer by Jared Walsh, an RBI single by Cowart and a two run single by Pena. Cowart and Pena led the way with two hits and three runs batted in each.
In the nightcap, Cowart singled to center to drive in the courtesy runner in the top of the tenth for a 7-6 win over the Rainiers for the sweep. The Bees were down to their last strike in the seventh inning when Jose Rojas belted a two run homer to tie the game at 5-5. Salt Lake took its first lead of the game in the eighth on an RBI single by former BYU star Brennon Lund, but another former Cougar, Jaycob Brugman, singled in the tying run with Tacoma down to its last strike to make it a 6-6 game. Luke Bard (1-2) earned the win with two innings of relief and Jake Jewell kept Tacoma off the board in the bottom of the tenth for his fifth save of the season. Lund and Rojas led the Bees in game two with two runs batted in each.
