Iowa Cubs News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Colin Rea held San Antonio to two runs through 6.1 innings as the Iowa Cubs (49-37) defeated the Missions (52-34) 5-2 in the series rubber match, Wednesday at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.
PCL All-Star Rea (W, 10-3) was brilliant as he allowed just two hits, walked three and fanned six in the outing. It was the righty's seventh quality start of the season and his 13th outing of three or fewer runs allowed over 5.0 or more frames.
Both teams came out swinging as each scored a first-inning run to lock the game. Jacob Hannemann led off the contest with a single on a 0-2 pitch and Ian Happ took advantage with an RBI double. In the home half of the frame, the Missions duplicated the effort as Trent Grisham roped a leadoff single and Mauricio Dubon followed with a double to plate the tying run.
The tie held until the fourth when Happ belted a one-out triple to spark an offensive drive for the I-Cubs. Mark Zagunis walked before Phillip Evans batted in Happ with a double. Donnie Dewees brought in both Zagunis and Evans with a ground rule double to cap the three-run frame.
San Antonio got a run back in the seventh on a Jacob Nottingham sacrifice fly, but the I-Cubs were able to keep the Missions at bay. Iowa added insurance in the ninth as Dewees scored on a Trent Giambrone single following a leadoff walk.
James Norwood took the ninth for the I-Cubs and collected his team-leading fifth save with a flawless frame.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Colin Rea improved to 10-2 and is the first I-Cub to collect double-digit victories since Jake Buchanan won 12 in 2016.
