ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Pacific Coast League announced Wednesday that Las Vegas Aviators infielder Franklin Barreto has been named the league's Player of the Month for June, following a vote of the League's field managers. Barreto, along with winners from other leagues, will be presented with an award from Minor League Baseball and Uncle Ray's Potato Chips in recognition of his performance for the month. Uncle Ray's Potato Chips are the official potato chip of Minor League Baseball.
Barreto led the league in total bases (85) and finished among the top of the league's leaders for the month in many other categories including: hits (41, t2nd), doubles (13, 2nd), RBI (32, 2nd), slugging percentage (.802, 3rd), OPS (1.204, 5th), batting average (.387, 6th), home runs (9, 6th), runs scored (25, 7th) and stolen bases (6, 9th).
The Caracas, Venezuela, native began the month hitting safely in eight of his first nine games. During the stretch from June 1-10, Barreto hit .500 (19-for-35) with six home runs, 17 RBI and scored 11 runs. He ended the month on an 11-game hitting streak from June 15-27, batting .370 (20-for-54) with three home runs, while scoring 12 runs and notching 14 RBI. Barreto had 11 multi-hit games for the month, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort on June 6 against the Round Rock Express where he launched two home runs, scored three runs and had four RBI.
Barreto was recalled by the Oakland Athletics on June 30 and on July 2 hit a double and scored a run in the Athletics 8-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins. He has now spent parts of three seasons at the Major League level with the Athletics, having played in 60 games scoring 22 runs with seven home runs and 22 RBI. He made his Major League debut on June 24, 2017, going 2-for-5 including collecting his first Major League hit, which was a home run off Chicago White Sox starter James Shields. For Barreto, this is the first Player of the Month honor in his seven-year career.
