Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of infielder Robel Garcia from the Iowa Cubs. The switch hitter has batted .285 (73-for-256) with 48 runs, 14 doubles, one triple, 21 home runs and 58 RBI between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. This is the first major league call up for the 26-year-old.

Beginning the season with Double-A Tennessee, Garcia hit .295 (23-for-78) with six home runs through 22 games before receiving a promotion to Iowa on May 9. The infielder added 14 home runs to his season total in 50 games with Iowa while batting .281 (50-for-178). Garcia has been versatile in the field as an I-Cub, logging time at third base (19G), second (18G), first (6G) and in the outfield (6G).

Garcia, a native of the Dominican Republic, returned to affiliated baseball in 2019 after a five-year hiatus during which he spent time playing professionally in Italy. He was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a free agent in 2010 but only rose as high as Single-A with the organization before he was released in the spring of 2014.

Garcia was scouted while playing for Team Italy in the fall of 2018. He was signed to a minor league contract by the Cubs on Oct. 31.
