Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 4, 2011) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Norwalk Hospital have teamed up in support of "Movember", the worldwide fundraising campaign for men's health during the month of November.
Through the end of November, Sound Tigers players, fans and team staff will start clean-shaven and then grow and groom their mustaches.
"Movember is another great initiative that our organization is excited to participate in," said Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan. "We hope that fans embrace this cause just as many members of our team have."
Fans who raise the most money and grow the most awesome mustaches will meet and compare mustaches with Sound Tigers players at the end of the month, and will be featured on the team's website, www.soundtigers.com. Signed sticks and other prizes will be awarded.
"Norwalk Hospital is pleased to join with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in helping to raise awareness of the fight against prostate cancer," said Dan DeBarba, president and CEO of Norwalk Hospital. "The more awareness we bring to this important health issue, the sooner we can find new cures."
Anyone - mustache or not - can donate directly to the Sound Tigers' Movember page at mobro.co/soundtigers.
Fans will also be able to purchase mustaches modeled after forward Trevor Gillies' signature Fu Manchu at Sound Tigers games, with all proceeds going to programs run by Movember, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.
The status of the players' mustaches will be updated often via the Sound Tigers' and Norwalk Hospital's Facebook pages and Twitter feeds, and fans are encouraged to post photos of their own moustaches on the team's Facebook page.
"Last year, Movember became a truly global movement," said Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder of Movember. "Through the power of the mustache, almost half a million Movember participants raised 174 million, making us the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research in the world. This success was made possible by the individual efforts of each supporter, and we hope they'll join us this year, as there is still much work to do. With more than 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer expected this year, the need for new collaborative research is more urgent than ever."
