Last season as a rookie, the product of Windsor, Ontario played in 73 games with the Phantoms, and accumulated 16 goals and 12 assists. Wellwood turned pro following a standout junior season with his hometown Windsor Spitfires in 2009-10, when the speedy winger had 31 goals and 37 assists in 65 games. Wellwood had 58 goals and 67 assists in four seasons with Windsor, and was a Memorial Cup-winner in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. Wellwood is the younger brother of Kyle Wellwood, who has played in 385 NHL games between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Winnipeg Jets.
