Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Robert Bortuzzo from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Bortuzzo, 22, has played in two games this season for WBS, going scoreless with a plus-3 rating. Bortuzzo missed all of training camp and the first several weeks of the season following an injury suffered at the rookie tournament in Oshawa, ON in early September.
Last season, the 6-foot-3, 196-pound Bortuzzo established career highs with 4 goals, 22 assists, 26 points and a plus-28 rating in 79 games. Bortuzzo's plus-28 rating led WBS and ranked second in the AHL. He also helped the Penguins allow an AHL-low 183 goals.
Bortuzzo, who hails from Thunder Bay, ON, has spent the previous two-plus seasons playing for WBS, tallying 38 points (6G-32A) and posting a plus-44 rating in 156 regular-season games. He has added one assist in 16 postseason contests.
Bortuzzo, who was drafted by the Penguins in the third round (78th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft, played three seasons with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2006-09, posting 49 points (6G-43A) in 138 regular-season games. Bortuzzo appeared in 27 postseason contests for the Rangers, scoring 11 points (1G-10A).
