Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Providence Bruins Saturday night by a final score of 2-1. Mike Cornell and Alan Quine scored first-period goals while Anders Nilsson, in his first game back after being loaned from the Islanders, made 26 saves for his fourth Sound Tigers win of the season. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 10-12-1-3.
Cornell scored his first AHL goal at the 11:52 mark of the first to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead. The University of Maine product took a pass from Matt Lowry and, from the right point, sent a wrist shot past Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg. The assist for Lowry was his first career AHL point; he had previously played 12 AHL games for the Binghamton Senators in 2009-10.
Less than four minutes later, the Sound Tigers struck again. Pierre-Marc Bouchard had the puck at center point and fired a shot that was blocked. The puck trickled into the high slot for Quine, who delayed long enough to freeze the defensemen and snap a shot past Svedberg. The goal was Quine's third of the season.
The first period was one of the strongest of the season for the Sound Tigers, who outshot Providence 16-7 in the opening 20 minutes. Providence had the shots on goal advantage in the second, leading by a 10-8 margin, but through two periods. Nilsson stopped all 16 shots he faced.
In fact, Nilsson stopped the first 26 shots he saw, including the first 10 of the third period, as well. But with less than a minute to play in the third, the Bruins pulled Malcom Subban, who came on to replace Svedberg at the start of the second period, in favor of the extra attacker. With 12.6 remaining in the third, the Bruins put Nilsson's shutout bid to an end. After Rob Flick's shot hit traffic in front, a scramble ensued and allowed Justin Florek to fire the shot home to make it a 2-1 game. It put an end to the shutout bid but not the Sound Tigers lead, as they skated out the final seconds and held on.
The Sound Tigers now travel to Manchester for a 3 p.m. game at Verizon Wireless Arena Sunday afternoon against the Monarchs. The two teams play again at Webster Bank Arena next Saturday at 7 p.m.
