Devils Earn Record Sixth Straight Win
December 14, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - Three goals in the first seven minutes and two more goals to close out the game, propelled the Albany Devils to their franchise record sixth-consecutive win. Brandon Burlon and Artem Demkov both registered a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory against the Hartford Wolf Pack Saturday at Times Union Center.
Albany, which has outscored opponents 31-15 during their run, entered the game with the league's fifth best winning percentage. The Devils improved to 17-7-1-1.
"It goes in waves and you can't get frustrated, but I think when our games slipped a bit in areas we've been quick to correct it," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky of the streak. "We were struggling with the scoring, now we're scoring. The power play wasn't scoring, now it's scoring. Defensively we got a little sloppy, we tightened that up. These guys have been quick studies that way. It's been fun and especially with a young group, confidence is such a big thing and it's high for us right now."
Alongside Burlon and Demkov, Mattias Tedenby, David Wohlberg and Raman Hrabarenka also scored. Harri Pesonen registered a pair of assists and Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves for his third straight win.
"We're just doing the job we need and good things happen," Pesonen said. "There's a good energy here all the time and it shows on the ice."
The Devils used that energy to chase Hartford netminder Dov Grumet-Morris during the opening minutes. Tedenby, who registered two goals and an assist Friday, opened the scoring by redirecting a Seth Helgeson try at 4:41. Mike Sislo registered the second assist.
Moments later, Stefan Matteau and Joe Whitney helped release Demkov for a semi-breakaway at 6:53. Pesonen's behind the back pass setup Wohlberg for a one-timer at 7:43, ending Grumet-Morris' night.
Hartford's comeback attempt included a second period power-play goal by Danny Kristo at 15:05 and a third period tally by J.T. Miller at 6:41.
Burlon and Hrabarenka followed with goals at 8:03 and 14:46 of the third period. Hrabarenka's power-play goal extended his scoring streak to seven games and extended the Devils power-play goal streak to 11 outings.
"We just knew they were going to push," Burlon said. "They're not a team that gives up no matter what the score is. We realize we have to be better at both ends of the rink and thankfully we were and got a win out of it."
Albany owned a 32-28 shot advantage and went 1-8 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.
Next up, the Devils travel to face the Binghamton Senators Saturday at 7:05 pm. The game can be streamed online or on mobile devices at ahllive.com. Audio is available on 104.5 "The Team" ESPN Radio.
