Orlando Solar Bears News Release
Evansville, IN - A late third period goal off the stick of F Mike Ullrich forced an eventual shootout as the Solar Bears came back for a 5-4 shootout win over the Evansville IceMen at the Ford Center on Friday night. The victory pushed Orlando's winning streak to five games.
A quick start for the IceMen got them on the board early in the game. F Matt Schepke received a pass on the left side and fired a one-timer that glanced off of G John Curry and trickled over the goal line 1:17 into the contest. The Solar Bears answered back at 4:29 when forward C.J. Severyn battled a puck loose in the attacking zone and F Francis Verreault-Paul finished off the play by wristing the puck inside the left goalpost to tie the game at 1-1. Just past the halfway point of the first, F David Rutherford put the Solar Bears in the lead when he took a pass from D Bryce Aneloski and picked the top right corner to give Orlando a 2-1 lead which they took into the first intermission.
Two quick goals to start the second stanza put Evansville ahead 3-2. With Orlando on the power play, F Josh Beaulieu took a loose puck in the neutral zone, led a two-on-one into the attacking end, and picked the top corner of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Just 1:04 later, with Orlando still on the same power play, F Jeremy Langlois blocked a shot and raced in on a breakaway to give Evansville a 3-2 lead. D Colton Jobke answered back as he slipped a shot through traffic and inside the right goal post, tying the game at 3-3 at the 5:24 mark of the period. It was the first professional goal for Jobke.
Evansville snapped the 3-3 tie 8:47 into the final frame. D Matt Krug centered a puck toward the Orlando goal crease, but the pass kicked off a skate of a Solar Bears defender and inside the left post to put Evansville ahead 4-3. With time ticking down in the third period, F Mike Ullrich evened the game up for the Solar Bears. Forward C.J. Severyn moved the puck to F Francis Verreault-Paul on the left side of the attacking zone. Verreault-Paul fired a pass to Ullrich who redirected the pass into the top right corner and knotted the game at 4-4 with 1:13 left to play.
After neither side scored in overtime, Rutherford started off the shootout with a goal in the first round and F Zach Harrison followed up with a goal in the fourth round while G John Curry stopped all four IceMen shooters to secure the 5-4 shootout win for the Solar Bears.
