Here, There, and Back Again
The Wheeling Nailers and Elmira Jackals have logged plenty of bus miles over the last 48 hours, as the two teams clashed in Wheeling on Thursday, before traveling to Elmira on Friday, and ultimately returning to the Ohio Valley for Saturday night's third head-to-head meeting in as many days. So far, the Nailers have had the upper hand, winning 1-0 on Thursday and 5-1 on Friday, opening up a 3-0 lead in the 15-game season series. With a pair of low scoring games to start, Chaz Johnson launched himself into the season series lead in scoring, with three goals and four points, followed by Sahir Gill and Anton Zlobin, who have found their way onto the scoresheet three times.
Chaz Capitalizes in Comeback
Chaz Johnson spent parts of four seasons with the Jackals, before making his return to Elmira on Friday night in a Wheeling uniform. After being held off of the scoreboard in his first ten games as a Nailer, Johnson exploded, scoring Wheeling's second hat trick of the month (Carter Rowney - November 8th). Chaz tied the score at one at the four-minute mark of the second period for his first tally, then notched the Nailers' final two goals of the night, putting the final nails in the coffin for a 5-1 victory. The hat trick was the Montreal, QC native's fourth of his career and third at First Arena.
Rookies Also Shined
In addition to the ninth-year veteran Johnson, the Nailers got contributions from their younger players, as rookies Anton Zlobin and Sahir Gill registered multiple points on Friday night. After making his professional debut with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday, Zlobin picked up an assist on each of Johnson's three goals, giving him the first three points of his pro career. Gill added a goal and an assist, giving him points in two straight games, as well as four of the six games that he has been in the lineup. Fellow rookie Cody Sylvester also lit the lamp, while rookie goaltender Mike Condon stopped 39 of 40 shots for his fourth of the season.
It Had Been a While
With 4:40 left in the third period on Friday, Wheeling put an end to a streak that they were happy to see disappear. The Nailers had gone nine games without scoring a power play goal, being held off of the scoreboard in 31 consecutive man advantage situations. Oddly enough, both of Wheeling's power play tallies this season have come against Elmira, as the Nailers are now 2-for-7 in the three head-to-head contests. On the other side of the special teams battle, Wheeling's penalty kill has been successful, regardless of opponent, as the Nailers enter tonight with a 90.9% success rate, including a 14-for-14 mark against the Jackals.
Big Finishers
Through the first eleven games of the season, the Nailers haven't gotten out to the quickest starts, but they have certainly finished in powerful fashion. Wheeling has scored just three goals in the first period thus far, but has tallied 12 times each in the second and third periods, including a pair of four-goal outbursts on November 2nd (3rd period) against Greenville and November 15th (2nd period) against Elmira. Friday night marked the Nailers' third comeback win of the year, as well as their second win, after allowing the game's first goal.
