Snappers come up short in pitchers' duel with Burlington
June 5, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
Beloit, WI - A night after getting blown out by the Bees, the Snappers allowed just three runs on Wednesday night. Similar to Tuesday's game, however, Beloit could not muster enough offense to recover from an early deficit and ended up falling to Burlington, 3-2. The Snappers are now 7- 20 at Pohlman Field this season and have yet to win a home series.
Right-hander Aiden McIntyre (1-4, 2.70 ERA), named to the Midwest League Western Division's All-Star roster earlier in the day, took the mound for the Snappers on Wednesday, but did not have the start he wanted. He scuffled mightily with his command early on: all three runs the Bees scored were courtesy of bases-loaded walks from McIntyre in the first inning. Despite not having his best stuff, though, McIntyre was not charged with an earned run, as Beloit's defense committed three errors behind him.
McIntyre only managed three innings; four walks and seven strikeouts forced him to throw 76 pitches on the day. He allowed just two hits, however, and mitigated damage enough to keep the Snappers in the game.
Beloit received an RBI single from Logan Farrar in the second inning and a Lester Madden RBI double in the sixth, but the Snappers otherwise struggled to take advantage with runners on. They left 16 on base and were just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Most of Beloit's traffic on the bases came against Burlington starter Cole Duensing (5-2, 4.40 ERA), who weaved in and out of trouble on multiple occasions. The righty threw 5+ innings while allowing two runs on six hits. Duensing walked two and struck out three. The Bees' bullpen finished the job: Luke Lind fired three perfect innings before Tyler Smith recorded his fourth save of the season.
The Snappers received some stellar relief work as well. Brandon Withers (2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 4 K) and Ty Damron (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 K) combined for five shutout innings while Midwest League All-Star Eric Marinez threw a scoreless top of the ninth.
Beloit will look to avoid the three-game sweep tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT. Chase Cohen (4-5, 7.19 ERA) will hope to build off his quality start in his last outing while facing the Bees' Cristopher Molina (3-2, 1.49 ERA).
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and have been the Single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. For more ticket information, contact the Snappers office at (608) 362- 2272 or visit our website, www.snappersbaseball.com.
