South Carolina Stingrays News Release

Biloxi, MS - The South Carolina Stingrays traveled South to take on the Mississippi for the two games, in hopes of turning around a 5 game losing streak. Chris Chaput scored two goals and Andrew Gordon added another, but it wasn't enough as the Rays dropped their sixth straight at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum by a score of 5-3.

"Obviously we are really frustrated right now with the way we are playing," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "That being said, this was not a good game for us, and not a game we deserved to win."

It was a back and forth first period, until in a span of 43 seconds when three goals were scored. The first goal came of the stick of Gordon, his 5th goal with the South Carolina, with the assists going to Stephen Werner and Chaput, at 12:14. A mere seconds after that, the Wolves tied it up with a goal from Pat Oliveto, his 3rd of the year. But the Rays jumped right back into the action, as Chaput got his first goal of the game, third of the year, from Werner and Gordon at 12:57.

In the second period the Sea Wolves took over and scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead after two periods. It was Chris Cava's power play goal that tied the game up at 2, and Mark Hurtubise's even strength goal that gave them the lead for good.

The Wolves padded their lead in the third period when Zbynek Hrdel scored his first goal to make the score 4-2. South Carolina showed signs of life however on the power play, as Chaput scored his second goal of the game, his fourth of the season, from Werner and Pierre-Luc O'Brien at 17:10 to cut the lead to one, 4-3. Mississippi made sure that the Rays didn't come back, when Jason Tejchma got his 6th goal of the season to make it 5-3.

The Stingrays pulled goaltender Josh Johnson to get the extra attacker, but to no avail, as they were unable to get anything past Morgan Cey as time expired.

The winning goaltender was Cey who stopped 38 of 41 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Johnson who stopped 23 of 28 shots he faced. The Rays went 1 for 4 on the power play while killing off 3 of 4 short handed situations.

"All we can do is come out tomorrow night and try to turn this around," said Bednar. "Tomorrow's another day, another game, and another chance for us."

Stingrays are back in action tomorrow night as they try to exact a small measure of revenge against the Sea Wolves. Game time will be at 8:05 EST on the radio at REAL 1340.
