Elmira Jackals News Release

Shawn Weller scored once in regulation and added a shootout goal as the Elmira Jackals won their sixth straight game with a 2-1 decision over the Columbia Inferno in front of 2,775 fans at First Arena. The victory extended the Jackals' North Division lead over second place Cincinnati to four points.

Following a scoreless first period, Weller got the Jackals on the board with his fourth of the year and second in as many games with Columbia's Mac Faulkner in the box for hooking.

Brett Pilkington carried the puck behind the Inferno net before tossing a pass to an awaiting Weller, who zipped a shot past Todd Ford (30 saves) for a 1-0 lead 5:59 into the second period.

The visitors countered on a long drive by Bryan Rodney with 8:01 left in regulation to set the stage for overtime and eventually, the decisive shootout.

Elmira out shot Columbia 32-26 on the night and 3-0 in the five-minute sudden death period, but nothing was settled with sixty-five minutes of hockey.

The Jackals won the shootout 3-2 with goals from Weller, defenseman Dan Boeser and the clincher by Benoit Doucet. Columbia countered on strikes from Daniel Sparre and leading scorer Jeff Miles, but fell short in their effort to send it to a sudden death round when Faulkner misfired on the Inferno's final attempt.

Joel Martin picked up his league-leading eighth win of the season in net as he stopped 25 of 26 shots. Elmira's power play converted once in four chances and extending its penalty kill streak to 16 straight in keeping the Inferno at bay in four man advantages.

The Jackals wrap up the most grueling portion of their early season schedule, 13 games in 20 nights, with games Tuesday at Dayton and Wednesday in Cincinnati. Join the Voice of the Jackals, Grady Whittenburg, for the Hill Top Countdown to Face-Off at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7) leading up to puck drop between the Jackals and the Dayton Bombers at 7 p.m.
