Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - Matt McBride's two-run home run capped the decisive four-run seventh inning rally that carried Colorado Springs past Omaha, 10-7, Saturday night in the opener of a four-game set at Security Service Field. The Storm Chasers slipped to 18-16 and stayed a game behind Memphis, which blew a five-run lead in losing to Fresno, in the American Conference North Division. Corey Dickerson finished with two doubles, a triple and a home run and drove in five for the Sky Sox, who maintained their half-game lead over Tacoma in the Pacific Conference North.
The Storm Chasers wasted no time jumping on Colorado Springs starter Jeff Manship for four first inning runs, as Johnny Giavotella, Max Ramirez, Anthony Seratelli and Chad Tracy provided consecutive run-scoring hits. The visitors built their lead to five in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Tracy, who had driven in just one run in his first 14 games of the season.
Chris Dwyer had blanked the hosts on one hit through four innings, making it only one earned run allowed by the Chasers pitching staff over the last 21 innings. However, things changed quickly in the fifth as Charlie Culberson doubled in between walks that loaded the bases with nobody out. Dickerson then cleared the bases with his league-leading sixth three-bagger and scored on a D.J. LeMahieu ground out that suddenly sliced the deficit to 5-4. The southpaw had not allowed more than two runs in any of his first six starts and only a total of nine over his first 42 innings, including Saturday night.
Manship last four frames and was charged with five runs on nine hits and gave way to Brett Jacobson, who worked a scoreless fifth inning before Brett Hayes doubled home Tracy with two outs in the sixth to push the Omaha lead to 6-4. Dwyer was lifted after a hit and a walk in the home sixth and replaced by Blaine Boyer, who need just one pitch to get out of the jam by inducing Culberson to bounce into a double play for the second time in the game.
The veteran right-hander, who had surrendered only one earned run all season before this appearance, suffered his first loss of the year after the hosts hit for the cycle in four straight at-bats in the game-changing frame. LeMahieu tripled to drive in Dickerson and scored on a Ryan Wheeler base hit to get the game tied at six before McBride followed with the tie-breaking long ball, his third in as many games and fourth of the season.
Tracy reached on an infield hit with one out in the eighth, advanced to third on an Irving Falu single and scored on a Manny Corpas wild pitch to bring Omaha within a run. But, the rally was stymied right there, as pinch-hitter Xavier Nady and David Lough struck out against the Sky Sox right-hander, who was the closer during the Rockies improbable run to the World Series in 2007. Dickerson then clubbed a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame off Donnie Joseph to account for the final margin.
Logan Kensing retired the first two batters he faced in the ninth before Ramirez and Seratelli singled to put runners at the corners for Tracy, who flied out to end the game. The visitors lost their seventh straight series starter, something that had not happened since the 2009 campaign.
The series continues Sunday afternoon with Omaha left-hander Ryan Verdugo taking the hill against Sky Sox right-hander Tyler Chatwood. Coverage of the game gets underway at 2:15 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
