Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds handed the visiting Sacramento River Cats a 10-3 defeat thanks to four home runs and six strong innings from starting pitcher Michael Wacha in the finale of a four-game series on Friday night at AutoZone Park.

With the win, the Redbirds took three of four from first-place Sacramento in the series and kept the club one game ahead of Omaha for the top spot in the PCL American Northern Division.

Wacha twirled his team-leading fourth quality start to move to a perfect 4-0. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed three hits for a pair of runs while striking out five and walking none in six innings of work.

Oscar Taveras went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. It was the slugger's third four-hit effort for the season.

Red-hot Ryan Jackson homered and doubled to extend his hitting streak to a nine games, the longest streak by a Redbird this season. Adron Chambers added three hits to extend his hitting streak to six games.

Both teams traded solo home runs to begin the game. Taveras lined his fourth homer on the year just over the right field wall in the first, while Shane Peterson crushed his third long ball of the season into the visitor's bullpen in the next frame.

Memphis quickly countered with two runs in the next inning and didn't look back, as Jamie Romak singled to lead off. Jackson then crushed the first pitch from Travis Banwart (2-1) over the left field foul pole for a two run homer, his first of the season.

Memphis got one run home on a bases-loaded groundout by Rob Johnson in the fourth before extending its lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back hacks from J.R. Towels and Justin Christian. It was the second time this season that two Redbirds went back-to-back.

Doubles by Taveras and Jackson accounted for Memphis' three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The River Cats scored a run in the third on two straight singles and a sacrifice fly from the rehabbing Hiroyuki Nakajima. Peterson singled home the club's final run in the bottom of the ninth.

Marc Rzepczynski struck out two over two scoreless frames. Eric Fornataro gave up one run in one inning.

The Redbirds continue their homestand tomorrow by welcoming the Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A-Giants) to town for a four-game series, the clubs' lone series in 2013. Left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-1, 4.00) toes the rubber for Memphis against Fresno right-hander Chris Heston (3-2, 5.82).

Help the Redbirds pay tribute to the clutch playoff hits of David Freese, Lance Berkman, and Pete Kozma during a '2 Strikes, 2 Outs, No Problem' fireworks show. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. and gates open at 5:00 p.m.
