Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Reno, NV - Will Smith was strong through six innings and Max Ramirez homered for a second straight game to power Omaha past Reno, 6-2, Friday night in the last of four meetings at Aces Ballpark. The Storm Chasers claimed the last two games to earn a series split, improve to 18-15 and remain one game behind Memphis in the American Conference North Division.
Former Omaha first baseman Kila Ka'aihue opened the home fourth with a single, advanced to second base on a passed ball, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a double by Juan Rivera, who has played for five different big league teams. Smith had permitted only run in his prior 24 1/3 innings before the hosts produced the game's first marker.
Reno right-hander Charles Brewer blanked the Chasers on four hits and did not allow a runner past first base through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth and could not get through the frame. Christian Colon started the decisive rally with a one-out single, raced to third on a Johnny Giavotella base hit and came in to score on Xavier Nady's single that tied the game. Ramirez then singled home Giavotella and pushed Nady to third but got thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Anthony Seratelli followed with his fourth home run of the season to make it 4-1 and end the night for Brewer, who took the loss after yielding those four runs on nine hits while fanning four.
Ramirez blasted a two-run shot, his sixth of the year, in the eighth inning to complete the scoring for the visitors and finish the series with eight hits in 15 at-bats.
Smith departed after allowing six hits while walking one and fanning five to earn the win and put together a fourth consecutive start in which he has not yielded more than a lone run. Louis Coleman took over in the seventh and set down all six hitters he faced and was followed by Michael Mariot, who yielded an unearned run in the ninth before striking out Tuffy Gosewisch with two runners on base to end the game.
Omaha will send left-hander Chris Dwyer to the mound Saturday night in the four-game series opener at Colorado Springs against Sky Sox right-hander Justin Berg. Coverage of the game gets underway at 7:15 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
