Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (20-13) clubbed six extra-base hits to defeat the Iowa Cubs (12-20), 11-1, and move a half a game ahead of the Tacoma Rainiers for first place in the Pacific Northern division.

Colorado Springs' bats came alive early as the team scored five runs in the second inning. First baseman Ben Paulsen continued his hot streak by leading off the inning with a single, and stealing second base. The next batter, Tommy Manzella, doubled in Paulsen and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Pomeranz (W, 5-0). With two outs in the inning DJ LeMahieu hit a RBI single to extend his hitting streak to a Triple-A best 19 games. Charlie Blackmon extended the inning on a single of his own and then scored on Matt McBride's three-run home run, his third of the season.

The Sky Sox offense continued to click on all cylinders in the bottom of the fourth inning when LeMahieu, Blackmon, and McBride hit back-back-back doubles to increase their lead to eight. They added another run in the fifth when Pomeranz scored on a throwing error by third baseman Josh Vitters.

After striking out the side in the fifth inning, Pomeranz retired his 10th and 11th straight batters in the sixth before giving up a single to Donnie Murphy. The lefty would get out of the inning unscathed and begin the seventh, but would be replaced by Rob Scahill.

Iowa finally got on the board in the seventh when Logan Watkins hit a RBI double to plate Darnell McDonald, who reached on a double to lead off the inning. The Cubs would remain off the scoreboard for the final two innings, but the Sox were not done building on their lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning Ben Paulsen hit his fourth triple of the year to drive home Blackmon and Tyler Colvin to make the score 11-1.

The win was the Sky Sox' 20th of the year and puts the team in sole possession of first place for the first time since April 27. Tomorrow the team will begin a four-game series with the Omaha Storm Chasers, the only time they'll face them all year. The Kansas City Royals affiliate will send left-hander Chris Dwyer to the mound (3-1, 2.13) against Sky Sox right-hander Justin Berg (1-1, 5.19), on Fort Carson Appreciation Night at Security Service Field. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM.
