Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Fresno Grizzlies scored six unanswered runs in the sixth inning for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Memphis Redbirds in front of 10,390 fans on Saturday night at AutoZone Park.
Cole Gillespie and Juan Ciriaco each had three hits for Fresno. Chris Dominguez's lone hit was a three-run homer off Jorge Rondon (1-4) to seal the win for the Grizzlies.
The six runs in the inning were the most given up by the Redbirds in an inning all season.
Memphis starter Tyler Lyons was cruising in the contest before getting into trouble to begin the sixth. The left-hander was touched for five runs (four earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts in five plus innings.
Coming into the game with a PCL-leading 15-2 record when scoring first in ballgames (including a 6-0 mark at home), the Redbirds scored five runs over the first three frames for an early 5-0 lead.
Beginning with the bottom of the first, Adron Chambers and Kolten Wong both reached on singles before Jamie Romak lined a two-run double down the third base line.
Lyons helped his own cause in the next frame as Memphis extended its lead to 4-0. With runners on first and second and no out, Lyons showed a sacrifice bunt, but pulled it back in time to line an RBI single to center. Chambers followed with an RBI double.
J.R. Towles singled home Ryan Jackson for the Redbirds' final run in the third.
Fresno starter Chris Heston backed into the win after scattering 10 hits for five runs in five innings before the rally. Dan Runzler converted his first save of the season to end the contest.
The two teams continue their series with 1:35 pm CT matinee on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Nick Additon (2-1, 4.20) faces Fresno righty Shane Loux (3-1, 4.21). The first 1,000 Moms on Sunday will receive special pink "Mama Bird" t-shirts, and it's also our breast cancer awareness day.
