New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Gorkys Hernandez lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to score the winning run, giving the New Orleans Zephyrs a 3-2 victory over the Salt Lake Bees on Friday night.
The teams waited out a rain delay of nearly two hours before starting the finale of the four-game series. New Orleans jumped out to a quick lead, as Hernandez was hit by a pitch to lead off the first inning. Hernandez then stole second and scored on a double by Bryan Petersen.
Rob Delaney, who appeared in 44 games out of the Zephyrs' bullpen last season, made the spot start for Salt Lake and escaped further damage in the inning by getting Ben Lasater to bounce into an inning-ending double play.
The Bees evened the score in the fifth, finally getting to Z's starter Brad Hand, who had worked 12 consecutive scoreless innings over his first two home starts. Hand tired in the fifth, giving up a single to Efren Navarro with two outs then walking Bill Hall to load the bases. Brad Hawpe laced a single through the hole at short to tie the game and end Hand's night, but Jonathan Albaladejo came on to strike out Roberto Lopez looking and leave the bases loaded, three of Salt Lake's 14 runners left on during the game.
Salt Lake took the lead in the eighth against reliever Chris Hatcher. Lopez hit a leadoff double to left-center but was thrown out on a sacrifice bunt attempt by John Hester. A wild pitch advanced Hester to second, and he scored when Jordan Brown's throw to Hatcher on a grounder by Andrew Romine sailed high, and Hester slid underneath the tag of catcher Jake Jefferies for the go-ahead run.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Petersen hit a towering home run to right off Ryan Brasier in the bottom of the inning, drawing the Zephyrs even at 2-2.
In the 10th, Jefferies lined a double over the head of right fielder Matt Young to lead off, and pinch runner Kevin Mattison moved to third on a fly out by Jake Smolinski, setting the stage for Hernandez's winning fly ball.
Hatcher (1-0) got the win after three innings of relief, allowing one run and three hits with three strikeouts.
Chad Cordero (1-1) took the loss, surrendering one run and one hit in 1 2/3 innings.
The Zephyrs open a four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
