Tacoma Rainiers News Release
METAIRIE, LA. - The Tacoma Rainiers rolled to a 14-1 series-opening win over the New Orleans Zephyrs at Zephyr Field on Saturday night. The team's 14 runs scored in the contest now stand as the most the Rainiers have tallied in a single game this season.
Tacoma jumped out to an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning thanks to run-scoring singles from Corey Patterson and Nate Tenbrink and a sacrifice fly delivered by infielder Nick Franklin.
Outfielder Stefen Romero stretched a 4-0 Rainiers lead to eight runs after hitting his third home run of the season with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth inning. He later drove in the team's ninth run with an RBI-double in the eighth. Romero ended the night going 2-for-5 and driving in five runs.
As a team, Tacoma combined to collect 14 hits in the contest. Catcher Jesus Sucre topped the lineup with a 3-for-5 effort, and designated hitter Rich Poythress turned in two hits and drove in two runs, including a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Reliever Brian Sweeney collected the win and improved his record to 4-0 this season after holding the Zephyrs to one run on three hits and striking out four over 2.2 innings. Andrew Kittredge (1.0 IP) and Danny Farquhar (1.0 IP) combined for 2.0 perfect innings over the eighth and ninth.
Starter Andrew Carraway tossed 4.1 shutout innings and surrendered two hits, three walks and struck out three in his team-leading eighth start of the season.
