Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs in the top of the seventh but the eight-run deficit was too large to overcome as they fell 12-10 to the Nashville Sounds Thursday night at First Horizon Park.
Trailing 10-2 in the top of the seventh, Jacksonville (41-51, 9-9) took advantage of some poor Nashville (50-41, 10-7) pitching and fielding. Charles Leblanc was hit by a pitch to start the inning and two errors allowed Paul McIntosh and CJ Hinojosa to reach base. With the bases loaded, Jake Mangum grounded into a fielder's choice but Leblanc scored to make the score 10-3. With Hinojosa out at second and runners at the corners, Jacob Amaya slashed a single, scoring McIntosh to make it a six-run contest. Xavier Edwards bunted to re-load the bases and a wild pitch brought in Mangum to cut the Sounds lead in half, 10-5. Amaya advanced to third and Edwards went to second on the wild pitch as Allen blasted a two-run double to make it a three-run game. Burdick, the eighth man to bat in the inning, rocked an RBI double to bring the Jumbo Shrimp to within two runs, 10-8.
The Sounds put some more distance on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Cam Devanney and Monte Harrison singled. With two runners on, Josh VanMeter walked to load the bases. Sal Frelick continued to mash Jacksonville pitching with a two-run double to increase the Nashville advantage to 12-8.
Following a scoreless eighth, the Jacksonville continued to rally in the ninth. Edwards led off with a walk and stole second. Allen rocked his second double of the game, scoring Edwards to bring the Jumbo Shrimp back to within three, 12-9. With two outs, Leblanc reached on a throwing error on Sounds shortstop Patrick Dorrian, that allowed Allen to score from second, making the score 12-10. The tying run came to the plate for Jacksonville but Clayton Andrews was able to lock down his fifth save for the Sounds.
Nashville started off strong against Jumbo Shrimp starter Jeff Lindgren (L, 6-5). VanMeter walked and Frelick blasted a two-run homer in the following at-bat to give the Sounds a quick 2-0 advantage. Abraham Toro went back-to-back with a solo shot in the ensuing at-bat to make it 3-0 after the first frame.
Jacksonville had their first 10 men sent down to begin the game, while the Sounds stayed hot adding a run in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
The Jumbo Shrimp broke through on the scoreboard in the fourth. With two outs, Edwards scored from first on a double from Allen to bring the Jacksonville to within three. Burdick followed suit with an RBI single making it a two-run contest.
The Sounds put up a three-spot in the bottom of the inning to put some more space on the scoreboard. With one out, Devanney walked and VanMeter singled. Devanney went to third and both men scored on a double from Frelick, pushing the lead to 6-2. Toro slashed a double, scoring Frelick to make it a five-run advantage for Nashville.
The Sounds blew the game open with another trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, VanMeter and Frelick worked consecutive walks and Toro was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hiura plated two runs with a single giving Nashville a 9-2 lead. Toro went to second on the base hit and scored on a single from Tyler Naquin to give the Sounds an eight-run lead.
The series continues Friday between Jacksonville and Nashville with first pitch set for 7:35 p.m. ET. The Jumbo Shrimp hand the ball to LHP Devin Smeltzer (4-5, 6.05 ERA) and the Sounds will counter with RHP Janson Junk (5-6, 4.56 ERA).
