Shutout Sends 'Cakes to Third Loss in a Row

Colin Rea fired seven scoreless innings and doubled to set up the Iowa Cubs' first run in a 3-0 shutout of the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Tuesday night.

The Baby Cakes have lost three in a row after a four-game winning streak, and have dropped three straight at home for the first time since April 18-20 last season.

Rea (6-1) yielded three hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk to move into a three-way tie for the league lead with his sixth victory. New Orleans had runners at the corners with one out in the second and two on with one out in the fourth, but double plays ended both threats.

The Iowa right-hander, who had struck out with the bases loaded to end the second inning, used his bat to kickstart the Cubs' offense with a fifth-inning double. Wynton Bernard followed with a double of his own to score Rea with the game's first run.

That was the only blemish for 'Cakes starter Mike Kickham (1-1), who went 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight, his highest total in two years. Jeff Brigham followed with 2 1/3 hitless frames, and has allowed just one hit in his last 14 innings.

Nusing the 1-0 lead, Rea worked out of one final jam in the seventh. An error allowed Yadiel Rivera to reach base, and Rivera stole second before advancing to third on a fly out, but he was tagged out at the plate attempting to score on a pitch in the dirt. Rea then retired Matt Snyder to end the inning.

Former LSU right-hander Parker Bugg made his Triple-A debut in the top of the eighth and surrendered back-to-back home runs to Ian Happ and Donnie Dewees.

Pedro Strop, on a rehab assignment from the Chicago Cubs, and Junichi Tazawa each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to complete Iowa's first shutout of the year.

The Baby Cakes wrap up their longest homestand of the season with the series finale against Iowa on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
