Shorebirds Fall Short Against Suns in Game One, 8-6

Salisbury, Md. - The Hagerstown Suns survived a late push by the Delmarva Shorebirds and took game one of the series, 8-6, at Perdue Stadium on Tuesday night.

Hagerstown exploded for a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning courtesy of five hits. The first five batters to the plate all came into score against Shorebirds starter Brent Allar. The big hit in the inning was a triple to right field by Sandy Leon with the bases loaded to score three runs.

The Shorebirds fought back in the fifth inning with three runs. Justin Dalles hit a one out single. Mikey Planeta followed with a soft tapper up the third baseline to move Dalles to second. Then, Hagerstown second baseman Adrian Sanchez threw errant to second on a force play to score Dalles. T.J. Baxter followed with a ground out to short to score Planeta. Justino Cuevas tossed low to first on a grounder by Helmick to score Rosa, which cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Suns stretched out the lead in the sixth inning. With two on and two outs, Rick Hague hit a single to left field to give the Suns a 7-3 lead.

Brett Newsome doubled home Destin Hood in the seventh inning to give the Suns an 8-3 edge.

The Shorebirds again fought back. In the bottom of the seven, Planeta hit a one out single. Then, Garabez Rosa hit a long homer that sailed over the left-center field wall to trim the deficit to 8-5. Two batters later, Gary Helmick hit a line drive home run that just flew over the left field to get the 'Birds within two runs.

Josh Smoker tossed a scoreless ninth inning for Hagerstown to close the door on Delmarva. It was his first save of the season.

Suns starter Evan Bronson earned the win in 6.1 innings pitched. He allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Shorebirds starter Brent Allar was pinned with the loss in four innings pitched. He surrendered six hits and four earned runs.

T.R. Keating made his Shorebirds debut in the seventh inning. He went two innings and allowed two hits and one run.

The Shorebirds and Suns square off in game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Kenny Moreland makes the start for the 'Birds.
