The West Virginia Power lost 4-1 to the Asheville Toursits on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Asheville scored a run in each of the first three innings, and the Power finished the game 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
Jared Clark hit his 22nd home run of the season off West Virginia starter Phillip Irwin in the first inning. In the second, Helder Velazquez singled in Carlos Martinez, while in the third, Clark scored on a sacrifice fly to build the 3-0 lead.
The Power's lone run crossed in the fourth as Evan Chambers scored when Jose Hernandez grounded into a double play. Asheville scored its last run in the sixth on another sacrifice fly.
West Virginia had multiple chances to tie the game. Hernandez represented the tying run when he hit into the double play in the fourth, when he struck out in the sixth, and again when he lined out in the eighth. Jarek Cunningham was at the plate in the ninth as the potential tying run before popping out to end the game. The Power left ten men on in the loss.
Irwin (5-3) was charged with the loss after allowing all four runs over six innings. Chris Balcom-Miller (5-6) picked up the win, while Sheng-An Kuo gained his 20th save. West Virginia amassed seven hits, with Aaron Baker, Bengie Gonzalez, and Chambers reaching on two hits each.
The Power and Tourists will play game two of this series at 7:05 pm on Wednesday night. Jason Erickson and Tyler Matzek will start for West Virginia and Asheville, respectively.
