Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC -- Sean Black fanned a career-high nine batters, and the Charleston pitching staff posted their second straight shutout, as the RiverDogs humbled the Rome Braves, 4-0, in front of 2,348 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday night.

With the victory, Charleston extends its winning streak to five games, improving to 27-24, 58-62 overall. With the loss, Rome's losing skid extends to eight for the first time since April, dropping to 21-30, 51-69 overall. The RiverDogs have registered back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Sept. 2009.

With division co-leaders Asheville and Greenville notching victories as well Tuesday night, Charleston stays 3.5 games back from the second half Southern Division crown and the team's first playoff berth since 2005.

Charleston improves to 8-1 against Rome at Riley Park this season and boasts a 16-3 record over the last 19 games played between the teams in the Lowcountry.

Black (7-8) tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless ball, giving up eight hits and fanning a career-best nine. The former Seton Hall Pirate has won three of his last four starts and three straight home starts.

Kelvin Perez sunk four batters over 2.1 scoreless innings, while Manny Barreda hummed a 1-2-3 ninth to finish the whitewashing.

Rome had countless opportunities against the right-hander, putting men in scoring position in every inning and collecting consecutive singles in three straight innings between the third and fifth frames. However, the Braves went a combined 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Charleston lit the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, when Emerson Landoni opened the frame with a single, and Slade Heathcott followed by drawing a walk. The two runners each advanced a base on a balk by Rome starter Robinson Lopez. DeAngelo Mack cracked a two-run single to right-centerfield for the lead. The former South Carolina Gamecock is 7-for-11 against Lopez this year with eight RBI.

Landoni added some cushion to the Charleston lead in the bottom of the seventh, when his single to right-center scored Kevin Mahoney from second, who stroked a one-out double, for a 3-0 lead. Heathcott blasted his 10thdouble of the year to left to plate Landoni to give Charleston a 4-0 advantage.

Robinson Lopez (3-8) takes the loss for Rome after giving up three hits and two earned runs in a total of 2.1 innings of work.

Mack and Landoni had two hits apiece for the RiverDogs, who have now scored 52 runs on 71 hits in the last six games.

Game two of this four-game series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston sending left-hander Josh Romanski (8-3, 3.31) to face off against Rome right-hander Willie Kempf (1-2, 3.94).
