Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (21-30) burnt the Delmarva Shorebirds (20-31) in Game 1 of a four-game road series on Tuesday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland to the tune of an 8-6 win.

The Suns have now won three consecutive ballgames, after crushing the Greensboro Grasshoppers' hopes of a series win on the recent homestand.

Hagerstown struck first at Perdue Stadium with a five-run fourth frame. 1B Brett Newsome lined an RBI single to right field scoring LF J.P. Ramirez, who singled. Then, C Sandy Leon ripped a bases clearing three-run triple over the head of Delmarva RF T.J. Baxter. SS Justin Cuevas added another blow with a line-drive single to left field, bringing in Leon to give the Suns a 5-0 lead.

LHP Evan Bronson (3-2) was effective through 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, but just two earned runs on six hits, while fanning one and refusing to issue a base-on-balls.

Delmarva answered in the last of the fifth inning when a throwing error by Suns 2B Adrian Sanchez allowed C Justin Dalles to score the first Shorebirds run. A Baxter groundout to short would serve as an RBI, allowing CF Michael Planeta to touch home. An additional error by Cuevas on a low throw to first base surrendered Delmarva's third run as SS Garabez Rosa crossed home plate.

Suns sticks provided two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and one run in the seventh stanza courtesy of a two-RBI single to left field by SS Rick Hague and an RBI double off the wall in right field to score RF Destin Hood, who also got aboard with a two-base hit.

A pair of `birds homeruns, a two-run shot by Rosa to left-center field, his fourth of the season, and a paint-scraping solo beam by 2B Gary Helmick, also his fourth this year, made the score 8-6.

But, the Suns would hold on to the two-run advantage, summoning LHP Josh Smoker to the mound in a save situation in the final inning. Smoker tossed a perfect ninth to garner his first save of the 2010 campaign.

The losing pitcher of record was RHP Brent Allar (2-3), as the Shorebirds starter gave up five runs, four of them earned, on six hits, while issuing free passes to three batters.
