Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Sean Sullivan scored the game-winning goal with 38 seconds remaining in overtime, propelling the Worcester Sharks past the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a score of 3-2 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Friday night. Worcester improves to 4-0-0-1 with the overtime win. The Sound Tigers record now stands at 3-4-1-0.
Worcester jumped in front of the Sound Tigers in the middle of the first period when they took advantage of a shorthanded opportunity. Tommy Wingels skated into the Sound Tigers zone and had his initial shot stopped by Mikko Koskinen, but Mike Moore pushed his way through the defense and knocked the rebound home for his first goal of the season to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead 11:09 into the game. The Sound Tigers had their own shorthanded opportunities, but Jeremy Colliton rang a slapshot off the crossbar and Tim Wallace was denied on a breakaway, and Worcester carried their 1-0 lead into the second period.
Back and forth play continued into the middle frame as each side had great scoring chances throughout the second twenty minutes. The score stayed 1-0 until the Sound Tigers finally broke through with just 22.5 seconds left in the second period. While on the power play, the Sound Tigers skated into the Sharks zone on an odd-man rush. Tony Romano took the puck into the slot and fired past Harri Sateri for his first goal of the season, and the Sound Tigers and Sharks were tied 1-1 headed to the third period.
Bridgeport broke the tie just after a Sharks power play had expired. Tomas Marcinko found Jeremy Colliton coming out of the penalty box, who skated in along the right side and sent the puck across the top of the Worcester zone to Ty Wishart. The Sound Tigers defenseman snapped the puck past Sateri for his first goal of the season and first goal as a Sound Tiger, and Bridgeport held the 2-1 advantage with 12:38 left in regulation. However, Mike Connolly would tie the game on a rebound with 5:46 to go, sending the game to overtime.
Both sides had chances in the extra session, and a fortunate bounce led to Worcester's game-winner. Connolly's shot on goal was blocked in front, but the puck landed right on the stick of Sean Sullivan, who beat Koskinen over his glove to give Worcester the overtime win.
Sateri made 33 saves to earn his second win of the season. Koskinen made 28 saves in the loss.
The Sound Tigers look to bounce back tomorrow evening on Latino Night when they host the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m.
