Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forward Brett Sutter to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Sutter, 24, was recalled to Carolina on Oct. 17, and earned one assist in four games with the Hurricanes. Prior to his recall, he skated in four games for the Checkers without registering a point. The Viking, Alb., native was named Charlotte's captain prior to the season, and was the Checkers' leading scorer during last spring's Calder Cup Playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 games, helping the Checkers reach the conference finals.
Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter (6'0", 200 lbs.) has totaled one goal, two assists (3 points) and 21 penalty minutes in 23 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 276 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 80 points (32g, 48a) and 272 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Sutter played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Kootenay and Red Deer, tallying 138 points (58g, 80a) and 274 penalty minutes. He is the older cousin of Hurricanes alternate captain Brandon Sutter.
The Carolina Hurricanes travel to Philadelphia tonight, where they will take on the Flyers on Saturday (7 p.m. ET, FOX Sports Carolinas HD, Hurricanes Radio Network). The Hurricanes return to the RBC Center on Tuesday, Nov. 1, to host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
