Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - Richard Clune and Dwight King each recorded a goal and an assist as the Manchester Monarchs snapped a five-game losing streak, defeating the Portland Pirates by a score of 5-2 in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of a sell-out crowd of 6,749 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Linden Vey, Marc-Andre Cliche and Jordan Hill joined Clune and King on the score sheet and Justin Azevedo notched a pair of assists as the Monarchs improved to 4-6-0-0 on the season.
Ashton Rome found the back of the net for the second straight game and Ryan Duncan contributed his third goal of the year as the Pirates dropped to 3-5-0-1 and 1-4-0-0 at home.
The Monarchs established a quick advantage in the first period, jumping to a two-goal edge with a power-play tally from Vey at 7:49 and King's first of the season at 12:18 on a crossing feed from Robert Czarnik who was making his professional debut. In the second period the Pirates would bounce back with a pair of their own, on goals from the left circle by Duncan and Rome exactly six minutes apart early in the second period at 3:18 and 9:18. The Monarchs had an answer early in the final frame, with Cliche knocking in a loose puck in the crease only three minutes into the period. A breakaway, backhand goal by Clune with less than six minutes remaining and an empty-net score from Hill with under two minutes on the clock set the final margin sending Manchester to their first victory since the October 15 game against Portland.
The Pirates out-shot the Monarchs by a 29-26 margin as Curtis McElhinney received the loss in net for Portland, falling to 2-4-0 on the season. Jeff Zatkoff earned his first victory of the season for Manchester, raising his record to 1-2-0.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from Manchester: 1. Cliche; 2. King; 3. Clune.
The Pirates will hit the road for a couple of more games against the Monarchs after an eight-day break. The two rivals will square off on Sunday, November 6 at 3 p.m. and on Wednesday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
