Portland Sea Dogs News Release

The Portland Sea Dogs (28-26) defeated the Reading Phillies (23-31) 4-3 on Friday night before 5,457 fans at Hadlock field. Portland held the lead the entire night thanks to some timely hitting and pitching to take game one of the four-game series.

Offensively, Ryan Khoury and Matt Sheely were the catalysts for Portland. Khoury went 4 for 5 with two runs scored in his first action at Hadlock Field in 2010, while Sheely scored a run and drove in the game-winning run in the eighth, in a 3 for 4 effort from the plate.

With Portland up 3-2 in the eighth inning, Sheely dumped a single off Tyson Brummett into right field which drove in Chih-Hsien Chiang. What seemed to be an insurance run at the time would prove to be the difference, after Reading scored in the top half of the ninth to make it 4-3.

In the first inning, Khoury would get things started on the right foot for Portland, ripping a line drive triple down the right field line. He would not spend much time at third, as Che-Hsuan Lin promptly singled to left field to bring home the games' first run.

Two innings later, Portland would get to Reading starter Drew Naylor for another run to make it 2-0. Khoury would set the table yet again leading off with a bunt single. Three batters later Khoury would find himself scoring on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rizzo.

Kyle Weiland (2-4) was solid on the hill for Portland in the winning effort. The 23-year old righty tossed five innings, allowing just one run on three hits, with five strikeouts.

The lone run off Weiland came in the fourth, when Tagg Bozied doubled to right-center field to score Domonic Brown all the way from first base. Despite an error by Chiang, which left runners on second and third with one out, Weiland would escape the fourth allowing just the one run. He struck out Kevin Mahar looking and got Brian Stavisky to line out to Rizzo at first to end the threat.

Santo Luis would take the ball from Weiland and throw three innings to earn his first hold of the season. Luis would strike out four Reading batters while allowing one run on four hits.

Weiland's counterpart Drew Naylor (4-6) saw his quality start spoiled, as he went seven innings allowing three runs on ten hits, striking out seven, walking three to pick up the loss.

Reading would make things interesting in the top of the ninth off closer Bryce Cox, scoring a run on a Tuffy Gosewisch two-out single to make it a one-run game. However, Cox would get Brown to tap a grounder back to him and apply the tag to end the inning and the game, with runners left on first and third, to earn his sixth save.

These two teams will be back at it again on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to get underway at 5:00pm from Hadlock Field. Casey Kelley (0-3, 5.30) is slated to take the ball in game one for Portland, while the Reading starter has yet to be announced. In game two it will be Jeremy Kehrt (0-1, 3.60) for Portland versus Reading's Vance Worley (4-2, 3.96).

Notes.Earlier on Friday, Portland and Reading completed a suspended game from May 27th in Reading at Hadlock.Reading would go on to win 10-7.Despite the loss in the suspended game, with the win in the first game of the homestand, Portland now has a two-game winning streak.
