Thunder Lose Second Straight

Trenton, NJ- Richmond's Clayton Tanner tossed a season-high 7 2/3 innings and held Trenton to three hits in a 2-1 Thunder loss on Friday from Waterfront Park.Trenton (21-23) was unable to answer Tanner(3-4) as the lefty produced 17 ground outs in the win for the Flying Squirrels. The lone Thunder run came on an RBI double from Dan Brewer in the bottom of the third inning.

Richmond struck first to begin the ball game off RHP Lance Pendleton, as Michael Ambort knocked in Clay Timpner with an RBI double to right field to give the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead. Trenton would tie it up in the third inning off LHP Clayton Tanner after an RBI double from Daniel Brewer drove in Justin Snyder all the way from first base.

Thomas Neil singled with one out off Pendleton in the fourth inning and scored on a Darren Ford base hit to take a 2-1 lead. Pendleton battled through just four innings and left trailing 2-1. Pendleton allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking two in his 11th start of the season. Ryan Pope took over for Pendleton to start the fifth inning and struck out two of the first three batters faced. Pope kept the game close while facing the minimum through three innings of relief and adding five strikeouts with no hits allowed.

The bullpen of Wilkins Arias, Josh Schmidt and Pope held Richmond at check throughout. Schmidt entered after a triple to begin the top of the ninth inning. the veteran right-hander picked up two strikeouts and a pop up to keep the game at 2-1 into the bottom of the inning. Rafael Cova picked up the final three outs for Richmond to earn the save.

Tanner finished with 7 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits while inducing 17 ground balls off the bats of Trenton hitters.

The Thunder and Flying Squirrels play the middle game of their series Saturday night starting at 7:05 PM. RHP D.J. Mitchell makes the start for Trenton, while Richmond will start RHP Mike MacDonald.
