Sea Dogs To Host National Shirners Awareness Day

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have teamed up with the Kora Shriners of Southern Maine to host National Shriners Awareness Day at Hadlock Field on Sunday, June 6th at 1:00 PM when the Portland Sea Dogs take on the Reading Phillies.

Over 150 Shriners from across the state will be attending the June 6th game at Hadlock Field. The Kora Highlanders, a traditional pipe and drum band, and the Shriners German Band will entertain fans entering Hadlock Field. Slugger the Sea Dog will be joined by a Kora Clown to help entertain the crowd throughout the game. The Kora Legion of Honor, a group of military veterans, will present the colors. The Shriners will have a table set-up in the Hadlock Field concourse for fans interested in learning about the Shriners, their hospitals or the Masons.

The Portland Sea Dogs will donate a portion of each general admission ticket sold through the Shriners to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Additionally, Caitlin Bazinet from Winthrop will throw out the ceremonial first-pitch. She will be escorted to the mound by a Chief Officer of Kora. Bazinet spent more than six months recovering in Boston-area hospitals, including the Shriners. Through intensive rehabilitation there, she learned to walk on two prosthetic feet and received her high school diploma at Winthrop High School's June graduation ceremonies. She was recently fitted for new prosthetics at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield and is living back home in Winthrop.

Shriners are distinguished by an enjoyment of life and a commitment to philanthropy. They enjoy parades, trips, dances, dinners, sporting events and other social occasions. Kora Shriners are domiciled in Lewiston, Maine. Kora Shriners 2,800 members reside throughout its jurisdiction which extends from Kittery north to greater Waterville-Winslow. Anah Shriners of Bangor retain jurisdiction for the northern part of the State. Kora has nearly thirty Uniformed Units that make appearances at parades, sporting events, and other public activities. Kora features twelve locally based Shrine Clubs that help support the endeavors of the organization. Kora Shriners sponsor an annual circus in April, as well as one of the premier car shows and the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl football game in July.

Shriners support what has been called the "World's Greatest Philanthropy," Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 pediatric specialty hospitals, operated and maintained by the Shriners. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one-of-a-kind international health care system of 22 hospitals, dedicated to providing pediatric orthopedic specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment at no charge-regardless of financial need.
