Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Richmond Flying Squirrels rode a strong pitching performance from left-hander Clayton Tanner to a, 2-1, victory over the Trenton Thunder on Friday night at Waterfront Park. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Richmond as they claimed the opener of a three-game series.

The Squirrels cracked the scoreboard quickly with a run against Trenton right-hander Lance Pendleton in the first inning. Pendleton walked Clay Timpner with one out. With two outs, Michael Ambort doubled off the wall in right field to bring Timpner around from first base for a 1-0 lead.

Trenton pulled even against Tanner in the third when Tanner walked Justin Snyder with one out. Daniel Brewer then sliced a double to the alley in right-center field. Snyder scored on the first hit of the ballgame for the Thunder to tie the game, 1-1.

Richmond grabbed the lead back in the fourth as they again got to Pendleton. Thomas Neal contributed his second single of the ballgame with one out to get the Squirrels started. Neal was pushed to second when Jackson Williams walked behind him, and scored when Darren Ford shot a single back through the box for a 2-1 lead.

Pendleton (3-3) retired for the night following the fourth with an escalated pitch-count. He had thrown 87 pitches while allowing two earned runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out three while taking his third loss of the season.

The Trenton bullpen held Richmond in check following Pendleton's departure, but Tanner had been on cruise-control since he allowed his lone run in the third. He lasted into the eighth inning, limiting the Thunder to the lone run on three hits. He rolled 16 groundouts in the process, turning in arguably his finest performance of the season.

Daniel Turpen recorded the final out in the eighth inning for Richmond, before Rafael Cova entered in the ninth. He walked a man, but slammed the door on Trenton for his 10th save of the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. RHP Mike MacDonald (1-4, 3.99) will make the start for Richmond against RHP DJ Mitchell (4-3, 4.99) for the Thunder.
