New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Shawn Bowman homered for the third time in four games, but the Altoona Curve defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 6-1, on Friday night before a crowd of 6,120 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in the opening game of a three-game series between the two division leaders in the Eastern League.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Bowman (1-for-4, HR) belted his seventh home run of the season just over the left-center field fence off Rudy Owens, trimming the Curve's lead to 2-1. Altoona manager Matt Walbeck was ejected after disputing the home run call by base umpire Jordan Ferrell.
One inning later, Danny Perales (1-for-4, 2B) appeared to hit a solo shot to tie the game, 2-2. But the hit was ruled a double and Perales, who had broken into a home run trot after thinking he had homered for the fourth time in three games for New Hampshire (34-22), was tagged out after rounding second base.
Altoona (37-18) took advantage of its good fortune by plating three runs against a tiring Luis Perez in the top of the sixth. Matt Hague (1-for-4, R, RBI) and Jordy Mercer (0-for-4, BB, R) drew back-to-back walks, and Hector Gimenez (2-for-4, BB, R) singled to load the bases. Alex Presley's grounder scored Hague, and Perez was lifted after loading the bases by walking Miles Durham. Shelby Ford (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) greeted reliever B.J. LaMura with a two-run single, giving the Curve a commanding 5-1 lead.
Perez (5-5) was charged with five runs on nine hits and three walks in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss. The southpaw fanned five.
Owens (6-2) notched the victory after yielding a run on five hits in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and three walks.
Derek Hankins tallied his first save with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
The Curve took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Hague's RBI single, and built the lead to 2-0 in the second when Presley (2-for-4, 3B, R, RBI) tripled and scored on Ford's run-scoring double.
Gorkys Hernandez (2-for-4, HR, BB) slammed his first homer of the year off Vince Bongiovanni in the top of the ninth inning to conclude the scoring.
The Fisher Cats and Curve meet for the middle game of their three-game set on Saturday night at 7:05pm with New Hampshire right-hander Kyle Drabek (7-4, 3.06) slated to meet Altoona righty Brian Morris (2-1, 2.40). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
An Atlas Fireworks Show follows Saturday night's game. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
