Scrappers Win Another Series

The Scrappers (21-22) are yet again a game within .500 after an 8-6 win over the Crosscutters (28-17) on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

With the win, the Scrappers take the season series lead against the Cutters, 5-4. The Scrappers have also won six straight series (Williamsport, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Connecticut, Tri-City, Williamsport).

The Cutters got out to an early lead against Scrappers' starter Leandro Linares. Zack Coppola scored on a Willi Castro error, and Josh Tobias scored on a Gregori Rivero fielder's choice.

Mahoning Valley responded in the bottom of the first. Castro led off with a single. He stole second base for his 14th steal of the season. He later scored on a throwing error from Cutters starter Jose Taveras. Ka'ai Tom reached on an error by Taveras as well, and he scored on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Salters. Taveras left after two-thirds of an inning in the first.

In the bottom of the second, the Scrappers took a bigger lead to lead it 7-3. Nate Winfrey was hit by a pitch. Alexis Pantoja reached on a Tobias error at second. Winfrey scored on a Connor Marabell walk. Mark Mathias smoked a double to left that missed a grand slam by inches. The double scored Pantoja and Castro. Marabell later scored on a Salters single, and it also scored Mathias.

Williamsport got a run in the top of the third thanks to the fourth home run of the season for Jesus Posso, who has been playing in place of Brendon Hayden.

Tom and Winfrey's hit streaks both came to an end on Wednesday night. Juan De La Cruz continues to swing a hot bat for Mahoning Valley. in five games with the Scrappers, De La Cruz is 11-for-22 since his return to the Scrappers.

Brock Hartson (4-0) is the new team leader in wins. Hartson went two and two-thirds, giving up just two hits. He struck out three. Yoiber Marquina pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save. Linares went three and one-third, giving up six hits, four earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Scrappers welcome the Batavia Muckdogs to Eastwood Field for the first time this season. First pitch is set for 7:05. Shao-Ching Chiang takes the ball against Dillon Peters.
